Overview

Synopsis

"Dark Mortal" follows the tragic life of Nam Kang, a boy who lost his parents in a horrific explosion and was left with severe facial scarring and blindness in one eye. Labeled a "freak" and mercilessly bullied throughout his school years, Nam's only solace is "Inky," a mysterious, amorphous black blob that only he can see. When a particularly violent bullying incident pushes Nam to the brink of death, his bond with Inky undergoes a terrifying transformation. Nam wakes up to find his scars healed, his sight returned, and his body imbued with superhuman strength—but Inky has vanished, now residing inside him. As Nam navigates his new power, he discovers the existence of other "Dark Mortals" and a dark conspiracy involving the orphanage of his past, forcing him to choose between revenge and humanity.

Librarian's Notes

The starting is very promising, and though it may feel generic (there are too many similar concepts out there), but the introduction of inky and shadowy beings who manipulate emotions change things up a bit. I read up to chapter 18 and can't say I wasted my time. The art is cool—not that great but works fine. I also checked reviews from 12 different sites and noticed that season 2 apparently isn't that great and the ending feels rushed, which honestly doesn't surprise me given the chapter count. 79 chapters including 1 epilogue doesn't do justice to the story in my opinion based on what I've read so far, but who knows, I might change my mind after completing it. Overall I can't guarantee anything so I won't firmly recommend it, but if you feel like giving it a shot, go ahead—it's not bad enough to drop.
