Overview

Synopsis

Theodore Miller is a student at the prestigious Bergen Academy, possessing a high level of intelligence and a deep love for magic. However, he suffers from a fatal flaw for a magician: a near-zero mana sensitivity. Despite five years of tireless effort, he remains stuck at the 2nd Circle, facing expulsion and the end of his dreams.
His fate changes when he encounters a tattered grimoire in the academy library. This book is the manifestation of "Gluttony," one of the Seven Sins. Unlike normal grimoires, Gluttony physically resides in Theo's hand and possesses the ability to devour magical books and artifacts. By "eating" these items, Theo instantly gains the knowledge, experience, and mana of the original authors. With an insatiable parasite as his partner, Theo begins his ascent through the magic circles, transforming from a talentless student into a master who will influence the fate of empires and challenge the legends of the Age of Mythology.

Notes

Special Notes

  • Power System: The novel follows a "Circle" system (1st to 9th), which is a common staple in Korean fantasy. What sets it apart is how Theo must "understand" the books to some degree before devouring them to maximize the efficiency of the A.I.-like Gluttony.
  • The "Gluttony" Grimoire: The book is not just a tool but a sentient character with its own personality and long-term goals, providing snarky commentary and guidance to Theo.
  • Manhwa Adaptation: The manhwa is often noted for its vibrant art style, though some novel readers have criticized it for simplifying the technical magic descriptions found in the original text.

Librarian's Notes

One of the earliest novels I read, so this review is going to be a little biased. This is a typical high fantasy novel, but the gluttony element makes it one of the most enjoyable aspects. Though my regret is it ended at 400 chapters, which in my opinion is too short. The novel had decent pacing, great plot progression, solid power system, and good execution. There might be some plot holes, but I cannot find them. The ending is also quite good, to be honest. Overall, in my experience, a good novel you won't regret reading.
